Yes, he's completely wrong.
Illiterate individuals have less access to information, and as such, can't form their critical thinking skills quite as adequately as those that are literate.
There's a reason why slaves in the Americas were not taught how to read.

you do realize you don't need to read to get brainwashed?
in fact, with reading, its much harder for bs to get through, because you can go back, and forth, analyze it slowly, with TV its just a jet of water being pushed inside your ass
