The Night Witches (or Nachthexen as the Germans called them) were the 588th Night Bomber Regiment of the Soviet Air Force in World War II. This regiment was incredibly unique in numerous ways. First and foremost being that every member of the regiment from pilots to mechanics to commanders, were female! They were known by for their harassment bombing and precision bombing of German troops at night, causing chaos and sleeplessness as well as significant damage.

Their tactics involved flying in at low altitude, shutting off their engines, and gliding into the German encampments to drop their payloads before restarting their engines and flying away (This is why in the picture the props are not turning!). Most of the time the only warning the Germans had was the whistle of the wind against the cables on the bi-planes as they dove to drop the bombs. By that time it was far too late to avoid the falling bombs. The Po-2 Bi-plane they flew were so slow that the max speed was lower than the stalling speed of both the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 (The two main German fighters) which made it very hard for the faster, less maneuverable planes to shoot them down. This lead to the Germans actually offering an Iron Cross to any pilot who managed to shoot down a Po-2.

They flew over 24,000 missions throughout World War II and dropped over 23,000 tons of bombs. They also flew without any parachutes due to the weight of the bombs making the planes too heavy to have the additional weight of the parachute. 23 of the Night Witches were awarded the title "Hero of the Soviet Union."
